Designed by William Morris in 1888, Brocatel represents one of Morris & Co.’s most ambitious and structurally sophisticated textile masterworks. Inspired by the heavy figured damasks of Renaissance Italy and medieval silk weaving, the design features sweeping acanthus leaf scrolls, stylised floral rosettes, and pointed seedheads woven seamlessly into a magnificent, undulating damask lattice. Renowned in decorative archives for its remarkable architectural symmetry, it was originally produced as an opulent, textured silk-and-wool wall hanging intended for the most prestigious late-Victorian domestic interiors.

Because Brocatel was developed primarily as an exclusive woven luxury fabric, its intricate textural nuance was never widely accessible as a conventional printed wallpaper. Dolls House Wallpapers painstakingly recovered the design from archival records and surviving textile specimens, reconstructing its layers at the structural line level. Re-imagined and hand-drawn as a true 1:12 scale wallpaper, it is a resurrected Arts & Crafts masterwork completely exclusive to our collection.

Translating the dense depth and tactile relief of a heavy Renaissance-inspired weave to dolls house proportion requires extraordinary artistic precision. Every contour of the acanthus foliage, stippled seedhead, and delicate floral accent has been refined with razor-sharp fidelity so the commanding damask repeat retains its stately presence without overwhelming miniature scale.

Morris originally utilised rich vegetable dyes and mineral mordants—madder, weld, and deep indigo—to produce colours of intense chromatic depth.
