Description
Designed by William Morris in 1881, Oak Damask represents the pinnacle of Morris & Co.’s decorative commissions. Created specifically for the Office of Works’ prestigious redecoration of the State Apartments at St James’s Palace, Oak was woven as an opulent silk damask to line the walls of the Throne Room and Blue Room. Renowned in historical archives as the single most expensive and luxurious textile Morris & Co. ever stocked, its ceremonial design seamlessly weaves together British oak leaves, acorn clusters, and wild briar roses within magnificent, undulating acanthus damask scrolls.
Because Oak Damask was reserved exclusively as a royal palace textile and never block-printed or published as a commercial wallpaper, it remained virtually lost to the public outside of rare textile fragments preserved in museum collections. Dolls House Wallpapers painstakingly recovered the design from obscure archival records and reconstructed it at the structural level. Re-imagined and hand-drawn as a true 1:12 scale wallpaper, it is a resurrected masterwork completely exclusive to our collection.
Translating the intricate weight of a heavy royal silk damask to dollhouse proportion requires extraordinary artistic precision. Every vein of the oak leaves, stippled acorn cup, and delicate petal has been refined with razor-sharp fidelity so the regal repeat commands presence without overwhelming miniature scale.
Morris originally utilized traditional indigo and mineral dyeing techniques to impart a rich, lustrous depth to the palace wallhangings. For our 1:12 scale collection, we honor that heritage by beginning with the stately blues of the original palace commission before developing our companion palettes. We carefully balance rich heritage backgrounds, muted architectural tones, and striking contrasting editions, ensuring every variation is curated to feel authentic, balanced, and perfectly proportioned for scale interiors.
Printed on premium high-grade matt uncoated paper with an authentic non-reflective surface — eliminating glare and delivering an impeccably realistic, era-accurate look under scale lighting and photography.
Ideal Applications: Stately dollhouse drawing rooms, formal dining rooms, throne or presence chambers, manor libraries, grand hallways, and traditional Victorian parlors.
