Description
Originally designed by William Morris in 1876, Snakeshead is celebrated as one of his most intricate and dynamic textile masterworks. Unlike traditional wallpapers, Snakeshead was originally created as an opulent hand-block printed cotton chintz, designed for luxury drapery and furnishings during Morris’s intensive experimentation with natural vegetable dyes alongside master dyer Thomas Wardle. Drawing profound inspiration from the rich motifs of historical Indian chintz fabrics, the design balances formal geometric rhythm with lush organic movement, capturing the wild beauty of native fritillary blooms amidst dense, undulating acanthus fronds.
Every element of this 1876 pattern has been painstakingly hand-drawn, re-mastered, and authentically scaled down to 1:12 miniature proportion. Translating the visual weight of an authentic printed chintz into dollhouse scale, the nodding bell-shaped blossoms, delicate stippled detail, and sinuous background diaper are rendered with razor-sharp fidelity, ensuring the pattern retains Morris’s iconic Arts & Crafts depth without becoming crowded or lost in miniature scale.
Morris’s original block-printed chintzes relied on complex multi-block mordant and indigo discharge techniques, layering rich vegetable dyes over warm grounds. For our 1:12 scale collection, we honor that heritage by beginning with the authentic archival colourways before developing our companion palettes. We carefully balance rich heritage grounds, atmospheric dark editions, and soft muted variations, ensuring every colourway is curated to feel authentic, balanced, and perfectly proportioned for scale interiors.
Printed on premium high-grade matt uncoated paper with an authentic non-reflective surface — eliminating glare and delivering an impeccably realistic, era-accurate look under scale lighting and photography.
Ideal Applications: Victorian drawing rooms, formal dining rooms, gentleman’s library studies, morning rooms, elegant parlours, and statement hallway feature walls.
